Not a remake so much as an argument with the original. Colder, longer, and about postwar German guilt.
Not a remake so much as an argument with the original, and it is colder, longer, and about postwar German guilt.
Luca Guadagnino keeps the dance academy and the coven and throws away everything else. The palette is grey and brown rather than primary red. The plot is comprehensible. There is a subplot about the Baader-Meinhof hijackings running on the television throughout, and a psychotherapist searching for his wife, who was taken in the war.
The dance is real and central. Damien Jalet choreographed it, and the sequence in which Susie performs upstairs while a woman's body is broken in a mirrored room below is truly extraordinary.
Thom Yorke wrote the score and it is nothing like Goblin.
It runs 152 minutes and the last act goes somewhere so lurid that people either laugh or surrender. Tilda Swinton plays three roles, one of them an elderly man, under prosthetics.

Adjacent
Hellbender
Made by one family during lockdown for almost nothing, and it looks better than films with fifty times the budget.
Don't Go Near the Park
Cursed cave dwellers from 12,000 BC eating people in modern Los Angeles. Incoherent throughout.

A disgraced puppeteer returns to his childhood home carrying a bag he cannot get rid of.
Huesera: The Bone Woman
Mexican, and the best pregnancy horror since Rosemary's Baby. The joint-cracking sound design is the thing.
Night of the Bloody Apes
A luchadora, a heart transplant from a gorilla, and real open-heart surgery footage spliced in.
A Dark Song
A grieving mother and an occultist doing a months-long ritual properly. The tedium is deliberate.
