Takashi Shimizu, between Grudge films, shot this in eight days about a cameraman who brings something home from the underworld.

A freelance cameraman obsessed with a suicide he filmed descends into a vast cavern system beneath Tokyo and finds a naked, feral woman chained in the dark. He takes her home and discovers she only drinks blood.

Shimizu made it fast and cheap while the Ju-on machine was running, and it is the strangest thing in his filmography: a first-person, digital-video descent into a personal hell, closer to Lovecraft and to Videodrome than to J-horror.

The lead is played by the film director Shinya Tsukamoto, who made Tetsuo, which is a knowing piece of casting.

It is deliberately disorienting and unpleasant, and its subject is the way a camera can turn a person into a voyeur incapable of ordinary connection.

Minor and peculiar, and worth seeking out for how unlike his famous work it is.
