Resolution
Two friends in a cabin while something rewrites the story around them. Benson and Moorhead's first film.
A man handcuffs his addict friend to a pipe in a remote cabin to force him through withdrawal over a week. Something in the area starts leaving them recordings, films and photographs of themselves that they have not made yet.
Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead made their debut for almost nothing, and it is a horror film about narrative: an unseen entity is telling their story and is dissatisfied with the ending, and keeps escalating the material to get a better one.
It is funny, low-key and builds a truly original cosmic dread out of the idea that you are a character and something wants a more satisfying third act.
It shares a universe with their later The Endless, which revisits the same location.
The friendship between the two leads is the reason the metaphysics land.

Adjacent
Delirium
A Vietnam veteran, a vigilante group and a plot that gives up. Not the Lamberto Bava one.
Penda's Fen
A BBC play about a repressed vicar's son in the English countryside, and it is one of the strangest things ever broadcast.
I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses
A Canadian courtroom drama about a real murder. Its presence on the list is inexplicable.
Sissy
An Australian wellness influencer at a hen weekend. Much sharper and much nastier than the premise suggests.
Exposé
The only British film on the DPP list. A novelist, a typist and Fiona Richmond in a farmhouse.
The Slayer
A painter's nightmares kill people on an off-season island. Genuinely atmospheric and badly underrated.
