Bug

William Friedkin directing a two-hander in a motel room about shared delusion, and it is not what the trailer sold.

A lonely waitress in an Oklahoma motel takes in a drifter who believes the government has implanted insects under his skin. She wants to be loved. She starts to see them too.

Friedkin, who made The Exorcist, adapted Tracy Letts's play and kept it almost entirely in the one room, and it is a horror film about folie à deux, two damaged people reinforcing each other's madness until the room is lined in foil and flypaper and they are pulling out their own teeth.

Ashley Judd is extraordinary and the film was mis-marketed as a creature feature, which infuriated audiences expecting bugs.

There are no bugs. That is the entire point, and the film's escalation into shared psychosis is more frightening than any monster.

It is a chamber piece about loneliness and it is deeply upsetting.
