Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum

The conceit is that everybody is wearing a head-mounted camera and streaming to an audience whose comment count is on screen, which gives the film a genuine engine: the host has planted fake scares to grow the numbers, so nobody believes the real ones.

Jung Bum-shik shoots almost entirely in first person with the cameras rigged to the actors, and the effect of watching four feeds at once as the group separates is horrible in the right way.

Ward 402 is the room that must not be opened, established early and paid off exactly.

The real Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital was a tourist destination for urban explorers, and the owner sued to stop the film. It was demolished in 2018.

It is the best-executed found footage since REC.
