Trap

Shyamalan's high-concept swing: a serial killer takes his daughter to a pop concert that is a police trap for him.

A devoted father brings his teenage daughter to a stadium show by a pop star. He gradually realises the entire event is an operation to catch a killer called The Butcher, and that he is The Butcher.

Shyamalan flips the structure: the audience knows within twenty minutes, and the film becomes a suspense piece about whether he can get out of a sealed arena with thousands of police, played almost entirely from the killer's point of view.

Josh Hartnett is the whole film and is truly charismatic as a monster maintaining a dad's smile.

The concert is real enough that Shyamalan cast his own daughter as the pop star and had her perform a full set.

The second half, once it leaves the arena, is weaker than the first, which is the common Shyamalan problem. The first hour is one of his best ideas.
