Woman of the Hour

In 1978, an aspiring actress goes on the television show The Dating Game and picks, from three hidden bachelors, a man who was in the middle of a string of murders of young women.

Kendrick directs and stars, and the choice she makes is not to centre the killer: the film keeps cutting away from Rodney Alcala to the women, the ones he killed and the ones who got away, and it is about the everyday danger the show's format made light of.

It refuses the serial-killer-thriller pleasures on purpose, which is the point and which some viewers find frustrating.

Daniel Zovatto plays Alcala as unremarkable, which is the horror: he was charming enough to win a dating show while actively killing.

It is a restrained, angry debut about how ordinary the danger was.
