Strange Darling

Told out of order in six numbered chapters, shot on 35mm by Giovanni Ribisi, and the structure is the entire trick.

A one-night stand goes wrong. The film opens on chapter three, then jumps, and the reordering means that for most of the running time you are confidently wrong about who is doing what to whom.

JT Mollner wrote it so that the deception survives the reveal: watch it again and the film has not cheated, it has simply relied on you filling in a gap with an assumption.

Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner are both very good and the film needs the performances to work in two registers at once.

Ribisi had never shot a feature before. It looks better than almost anything else released that year.
