A shuttle finds three perfectly preserved humanoids in a craft in the tail of Halley's Comet. Brought back to London, they turn out to be energy vampires, and one of them, a naked woman who never blinks, triggers a plague that turns the city into a horde of desiccated husks.

Hooper made it with Cannon money as his big-budget swing after Poltergeist, and it is gloriously unhinged: a John Dykstra effects extravaganza, a Henry Mancini score, and a plot that lurches from hard science fiction to zombie apocalypse to full London-in-flames spectacle.

Mathilda May spends most of the film nude and unblinking, which is exactly as strange as it sounds.

It flopped enormously and is now a cult favourite precisely for its excess.

The restored 116-minute cut is the one to see.
