From Beyond
Stuart Gordon and Jeffrey Combs reunite after Re-Animator for a Lovecraft story about a machine that reveals what is always there.
A resonator stimulates the pineal gland and lets people see the creatures that share our space at all times. It also lets the creatures see us.
Gordon adapts a very short Lovecraft story into a lurid, pink-and-purple body-horror film in which everybody's appetites are heightened by the machine: Combs's scientist, Barbara Crampton's psychiatrist, and a mentor who becomes something worse each time the device is switched on.
It is sillier and slighter than Re-Animator and it has a real idea underneath, that reality is a merciful edit and the machine removes the edit.
Crampton's performance and the leather sequence are why it has the following it does.
The pineal-gland effects, with a stalk emerging from Combs's forehead, are the standout of a very practical film.
