A town becomes obsessed with spirals. Junji Ito adapted before his manga had finished.

People in Kurouzu-cho start seeing spirals everywhere and then start becoming them: hair coils, bodies wind into shells, a boy turns into a snail over several weeks while attending school.

Higuchinsky came from music videos and shot the whole film through a green filter, which is either the boldest choice in it or the most annoying.

The manga was still being serialised, so the film has no ending and simply stops, which Ito has said he was fine with.

The snail material is the most successful, largely because it is treated as a mundane social problem: the boy is bullied for being slow before anybody registers that he is turning into a mollusc.

It is uneven and it is the only reasonable adaptation of Ito that exists, which is a low bar it clears.
