Event Horizon

A haunted house film in space, hated on release, and the studio destroyed roughly thirty minutes of it.

A rescue crew boards a ship that vanished seven years earlier and has returned. Its gravity drive folded space by opening a gate somewhere else.

Paul W.S. Anderson delivered a much longer and considerably more extreme cut. Paramount, panicked by test screenings, forced it to under 100 minutes in about a month, and the removed footage was never properly archived. Searches for it have failed repeatedly.

What survives is a film with a great production design, a disturbing central idea, and a last act that is visibly missing connective tissue.

The video log is the sequence everybody remembers, and it is a few seconds long.

It flopped, was reviewed with contempt, and has become one of the most reassessed films of the decade. The Warhammer 40,000 comparison is made constantly and is fair.
