A love story that happens to involve an immortal woman whose body is not stable. Benson and Moorhead again.
An American drifting after his mother's death goes to Italy and falls for a local woman who is evasive, brilliant, and periodically has to inject herself to stop turning into something.
Benson and Moorhead made a genuine romance with a monster in it: she is thousands of years old, regenerates by becoming pregnant with herself, and cycles through every evolutionary form in her body when the treatment fails.
It has been called Richard Linklater meets Lovecraft, which is exactly right: long walking conversations in a beautiful coastal town, and a creature effect that is horrifying and never treated as the point.
The question the film asks is whether she will choose to become mortal for him, and the answer is tied to a biological deadline.
It is a horror film that is actually about love, which almost none of them manage.
