The Curse of Frankenstein
The film that made Hammer, made in colour, with blood that looks like blood.
Hammer had been a minor outfit making second features. This cost about 65,000 pounds, made a fortune, and reorganised British film production for fifteen years.
The change is colour. Universal's monsters were grey and theatrical. Terence Fisher shot Frankenstein's laboratory in reds and greens with visible viscera in jars, and the critics of the time were appalled in exactly the terms later used about the video nasties.
Peter Cushing plays the Baron as the monster of the piece: cold, well-mannered, entirely without conscience, and prepared to murder to obtain a good brain. That relocation of the horror from the creature to the scientist is Hammer's actual innovation.
Christopher Lee is under makeup deliberately designed to look nothing like Universal's, because Universal threatened to sue.
Fisher, Cushing and Lee made twenty-odd films together after this.
