Del Toro doing full gothic romance, and the marketing sold it as a haunted house film, which annoyed everybody. It is a ghost story only in the sense that ghosts appear.

The house is the reason. Allerdale Hall was built as a practical four-storey set with a hole in the roof so snow and leaves fall into the entrance hall, and it is sinking into a clay deposit that bleeds red through the floorboards. Nothing rendered has that weight.

Structurally it is Bluebeard and it is not hiding it: a young woman marries a charming stranger, is taken to his family home, and is told which parts she may not enter.

Jessica Chastain is having the best time of anybody involved.

The ghosts are not the threat, which is stated in the first line of the film and is still the thing people complain about.
