A killer active decades ago appears to be back, murdering to a pattern connected to a children's book about animals. A retired detective who failed to catch him the first time comes out of retirement.

Made after a run of weak films, this was received as Argento returning to form: it opens with a bravura chase through a train that is among the best things he shot in the period, and Goblin reunited to score it.

Max von Sydow gives the material more than it strictly earns, playing a man losing his memory racing to solve a case before he forgets it.

It is extremely violent even by his standards and the plot is the usual nonsense, but the set pieces are genuine and the film is far better than what came before and after it in his career.
