Renfield
Nicolas Cage plays Dracula as a toxic boss, and his familiar wants to leave the relationship. A horror comedy about codependency.
Renfield, Dracula's long-suffering servant, has spent a century procuring victims and cleaning up, and has begun attending a support group for people in toxic relationships, where he realises his boss is the problem.
Chris McKay made a bright, gory studio comedy whose one good idea is treating the Dracula-Renfield dynamic as an abusive workplace relationship, complete with self-help language and boundary-setting.
Nicolas Cage is the reason to watch, playing Dracula with total commitment as a preening, needy, monstrous employer, and clearly relishing every second.
The action is hyper-stylised and extremely bloody, closer to a comic-book film than to horror, and the tone is broad throughout.
It is minor and it is a lot of fun, and Cage's Dracula is a genuine addition to a very crowded field.
