Night of the Comet
A comet turns most of Los Angeles to dust, and two Valley girls inherit the city.
A comet the Earth passes through reduces anyone exposed to red dust, leaves a few as flesh-eating survivors, and spares two sisters who happened to sleep in steel-lined rooms.
Thom Eberhardt made a genuine oddity: an apocalypse comedy with two teenage girls as the leads, who respond to the end of the world by going shopping in an empty mall to a pop soundtrack, then having to deal with both zombies and a sinister government think-tank.
It is a clear ancestor of Buffy and every wisecracking-final-girl film since, and it treats its heroines as competent and funny rather than as victims.
Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney are both excellent.
It is bright, cheap and much smarter than its premise, and the empty-Los-Angeles photography is truly eerie under the red sky.

Adjacent
You'll Never Find Me
A stranger knocks during a storm at a caravan-park trailer, and neither of the two people is quite what they seem.
Forest of Fear
Marijuana growers, a herbicide and some very slow zombies. On the list by accident of title.
Long Weekend
A couple with a failing marriage treat a beach with contempt. Nothing supernatural happens.
Messiah of Evil
A California coastal town waiting for a blood moon, made by the writers of American Graffiti, and it looks like nothing else.
Impetigore
An Indonesian folk horror about a woman who returns to a village that has been waiting for her.
Cannibal Apocalypse
Vietnam veterans come home with a bite that spreads. A better idea than the film delivers.
