Mrs Li wants her husband back. Aunt Mei has a recipe. The film's horror is entirely in the sound design: the crunch is deliberate, repeated, and worse each time.

Christopher Doyle shot it, which is why a film about this looks like a Wong Kar-wai picture, all green and gold and shallow focus.

Bai Ling plays Mei as cheerful and completely without shame, and the film's real subject is the economics underneath: a mainland woman with a skill, a Hong Kong woman with money, and the supply chain between them.

The last twenty minutes go somewhere the setup does not require, and it is the most upsetting thing in Category III cinema.
