Hooper's follow-up to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, shot entirely on a sound stage and lit almost exclusively in red.
A man runs a swamp hotel with a crocodile in the yard and a scythe in his hand. Neville Brand plays him as a continuous mutter, and the film is essentially a chamber piece in which a series of people arrive and are fed to the animal.
The artificiality is total and deliberate: painted backdrops, theatrical light, no daylight anywhere. Hooper was reaching for a fever-dream register and the result divides people sharply between admiring it and finding it unwatchable.
Robert Englund is in it, seven years before Freddy, delivering his first memorable line.

Adjacent
Delirium
A Vietnam veteran, a vigilante group and a plot that gives up. Not the Lamberto Bava one.
Don't Go in the Woods
Shot in Utah for 100,000 dollars with a score that never stops. Beloved by a small and stubborn group.
Night of the Demon
Bigfoot tears a man's genitals off. That is the scene, that is the film, that is why it was prosecuted.
Sissy
An Australian wellness influencer at a hen weekend. Much sharper and much nastier than the premise suggests.
Mardi Gras Massacre
An Aztec-obsessed killer in New Orleans. A Blood Feast remake in all but name, and slower.
The Slayer
A painter's nightmares kill people on an off-season island. Genuinely atmospheric and badly underrated.
