The Hills Have Eyes
A nuclear family against a family mutated by nuclear testing. By the end there is no difference in method.
Craven's second film, and it makes the subtext text: a nuclear family versus a family mutated by nuclear testing, and by the last reel there is no difference in method between them.
A suburban American household with a caravan and a dog takes a shortcut through a military test range in the Nevada desert. There are people living out there.
Craven shot it in the Mojave in extreme heat with a crew who were barely paid, and the exhaustion is on screen in the same way it is in Chain Saw.
The point is the reversal. The Carters begin the film as helpless and end it setting traps, using a corpse as bait, and doing things the film explicitly frames as worse. Craven has said the whole idea was to ask how quickly civilisation comes off.
Michael Berryman's face sold it and he has said he was fine with that.
The dog is called Beast and gets more competent than anybody.
