Stuart Gordon adapting The Shadow over Innsmouth, relocated to a rotting Spanish fishing town.

A shipwrecked couple take refuge in Imboca, a decaying Galician port whose inhabitants worship a sea god and are slowly becoming its children.

Gordon had wanted to make this for two decades and finally did it in Spain, and it is the most faithful Lovecraft adaptation in spirit even though it swaps the title story: the town, the hotel, the hybrid townsfolk and the flight through the streets are all The Shadow over Innsmouth.

The rain never stops, the town is truly repellent, and the film builds real dread from the simple fact that everyone in Imboca is patient and there is nowhere dry to run to.

The flaying sequence is the one people warn about.

It is uneven and it is the best sustained piece of Lovecraftian atmosphere anybody has filmed.
