Trick 'r Treat
Four interlocking Halloween stories and the best anthology since Creepshow. Warner shelved it for two years.
A school principal, a group of children at a quarry, a girl in a red cloak, and an old man visited by something small with a burlap sack.
Michael Dougherty structures it so the stories overlap in time and space rather than sitting in sequence, and characters wander through each other's segments, which almost no anthology attempts.
Sam, the sack-headed child enforcing the rules of the holiday, has become a genuine icon on the strength of about eight minutes of screen time.
Warner pulled it from release twice with no explanation, and it built its reputation entirely on festival screenings and disc.
The autumn photography, all orange and dead leaves and jack-o'-lanterns, is a large part of why people put it on every October.
The rules are the point: you do not blow out the candle, and you always hand out sweets.

Adjacent
Delirium
A Vietnam veteran, a vigilante group and a plot that gives up. Not the Lamberto Bava one.
Penda's Fen
A BBC play about a repressed vicar's son in the English countryside, and it is one of the strangest things ever broadcast.
Don't Go in the Woods
Shot in Utah for 100,000 dollars with a score that never stops. Beloved by a small and stubborn group.
Hellbender
Made by one family during lockdown for almost nothing, and it looks better than films with fifty times the budget.
Attachment
A Danish-Jewish folk horror about a dybbuk, a mother, and a relationship the mother will not permit.
Sissy
An Australian wellness influencer at a hen weekend. Much sharper and much nastier than the premise suggests.
