Anthropophagous: The Beast
Famous for two shots and unwatchable between them. George Eastman wrote himself the title role.
Famous for two shots and close to unwatchable between them.
George Eastman wrote it and cast himself as the title character, a shipwreck survivor who resorted to eating his own family and now lives on a Greek island. Tourists arrive.
The pace is glacial. Long stretches consist of people walking through empty streets calling names, which is partly D'Amato covering a budget and partly a genuine attempt at desolation that does not come off.
The two sequences everybody knows are a pregnancy scene and a final act of self-consumption, both achieved with animal offal, and both are the sole reason the film has a reputation and a DPP listing.
Successfully prosecuted. Eastman and D'Amato reused the lead the following year in Absurd, which is the same film with a hospital in it.

Adjacent
Delirium
A Vietnam veteran, a vigilante group and a plot that gives up. Not the Lamberto Bava one.
Don't Go in the Woods
Shot in Utah for 100,000 dollars with a score that never stops. Beloved by a small and stubborn group.
Sissy
An Australian wellness influencer at a hen weekend. Much sharper and much nastier than the premise suggests.
Mardi Gras Massacre
An Aztec-obsessed killer in New Orleans. A Blood Feast remake in all but name, and slower.
The Slayer
A painter's nightmares kill people on an off-season island. Genuinely atmospheric and badly underrated.
Unhinged
Three women, a mansion, rain, and a twist. Shot in Oregon and stranger than its reputation.
