It is shot in Oregon in near-continuous downpour, which gives it a truly oppressive texture, and it is much stranger than its reputation. The mother at the dinner table delivering opinions about men is the tonal centre and it is closer to Southern gothic than to a slasher.
The twist is guessable and the film is not really relying on it.
It was made by people with no experience and it shows in the pacing, and it has a real following among people who value atmosphere over competence.
