The New York Ripper

Fulci's most repellent film, and it is truly designed to make you feel bad for watching it.

A killer murders women in New York and taunts the police in the voice of a Donald Duck impersonation, which is as strange and unpleasant as it sounds.

Fulci had made The Beyond and could have kept working the supernatural seam. Instead he made this, a mean, sordid giallo set in a grimy pre-Giuliani Manhattan, with killings that are more sustained and more misogynist than anything else in the cycle.

There is no defending the content, and the film has essentially no admirers who claim it is pleasant. What it has is a genuine argument in its favour as the ugliest thing the giallo produced, a film that refuses any of the form's usual elegance.

It was seized in Britain and the examiner reportedly wanted it out of the country entirely.

It is here because the giallo is documented in full, and this is where the cycle went to die.

Every line is dubbed, including scenes with nobody talking. Almost hypnotically incompetent.
