The Entity

A woman is repeatedly assaulted by an invisible entity, and the film sides with her against the psychiatrists.

Carla Moran, a single mother in Los Angeles, is attacked in her home by something she cannot see. The psychiatric establishment insists it is a delusion rooted in her history. A team of parapsychologists believes her.

Sidney Furie based it on a real, documented 1970s case and made a genuinely uncomfortable film, one that is about being disbelieved as much as about the haunting, and whose sympathy is entirely with the woman against the men explaining her own experience to her.

Barbara Hershey gives a fierce, exhausting performance, and the film's refusal to fully resolve whether the entity is real is the point.

The effects, an invisible force pressing into a body, are achieved with a full body cast and were controversial for how explicit they are.

Scorsese has named it one of the scariest films ever made. It is a hard watch and an unusually serious one.
