The Monkey

Osgood Perkins doing King as a gore comedy, and the deaths are elaborate enough to be the entire proposition.

A wind-up monkey with a drum. When it plays, somebody nearby dies, in a manner that is always absurd and never connected to whoever turned the key.

Perkins had just made Longlegs, which is oppressive and slow, and this is the opposite in every respect: fast, bright, cheerfully nihilistic, and structured as a series of Rube Goldberg fatalities with a family drama loosely holding them together.

Theo James plays twins. Elijah Wood turns up.

The film's actual argument, that death is arbitrary and there is no lesson in it, is delivered by a hibachi chef and a swarm of bees, and it is more coherent than that makes it sound.
