The House on the Edge of the Park

Deodato doing The Last House on the Left with David Hess again, four years after Cannibal Holocaust, and it is the meanest thing on the list that has any craft in it.

Two men from a garage crash a party of wealthy New Yorkers and take the house. The class dynamic is the whole engine: the guests are contemptuous first, and the film is interested in how quickly that curdles in both directions.

Hess had played essentially this role in Craven's film and does it here with more control. Giovanni Lombardo Radice plays the friend who is out of his depth.

The final twist reframes the guests entirely and is the reason people defend it.
