The Front Room
A pregnant woman is forced to care for her husband's monstrous, dying, evangelical stepmother.
Belinda, expecting her first child, reluctantly takes in her husband's estranged stepmother Solange, a devout, incontinent, manipulative old woman who moves into the front room and begins a campaign of control that may or may not be supernatural.
The Eggers brothers, Max and Sam, made their debut a domestic horror of a very specific kind: the horror of caregiving, of a body in decline, and of a religious matriarch weaponising her own helplessness.
Brandy Norwood carries it as a woman whose home and pregnancy are being colonised, and Kathryn Hunter plays Solange as a truly repellent, ambiguous presence.
It divided critics sharply, with the supernatural elements pulling against the sharper domestic material.
It is uneven and its central performances are strong, and the subject, the abjection of the ageing body, is one horror rarely touches.
