The highest-grossing Korean horror film ever, and it is really a family drama with a haunting in it.
Two sisters return from a hospital to their father's house and their stepmother. Something is wrong with all four of them.
Kim Jee-woon adapts a Joseon-era folk tale and shoots it as production design: the house is wallpapered in enormous florals, everything is over-lit and beautiful, and the beauty is oppressive rather than reassuring.
The structure requires a second viewing and rewards it completely. The information is all present and the film never cheats.
The sequence under the sink, and the one at the dinner table with the guest, are the two everybody cites.
Im Soo-jung and Moon Geun-young are both very good and the film's real subject is guilt rather than ghosts.
Remade in America as The Uninvited, which explains everything and is worth nothing.
