The Coffee Table
A Spanish couple buy a hideous coffee table, and then the worst thing imaginable happens in the first act.
A bickering new-parent couple buy a gaudy glass coffee table against the husband's wishes. Within the first twenty minutes, a catastrophe occurs that the film will not let anyone escape for the rest of its runtime.
Caye Casas made a truly unbearable black comedy of dread: the event happens early, the wife does not yet know, and the entire film is the husband trying to hold an ordinary afternoon together while carrying it, with guests arriving and the truth one room away.
It is a single-location suspense piece built on the audience knowing what the characters do not, and the tension is close to intolerable.
Nothing is shown. The horror is entirely anticipation and the ordinary conversations happening on top of it.
It is one of the most stressful films on this site and a genuine feat of sustained dread. Approach with care.

Adjacent
Delirium
A Vietnam veteran, a vigilante group and a plot that gives up. Not the Lamberto Bava one.
Penda's Fen
A BBC play about a repressed vicar's son in the English countryside, and it is one of the strangest things ever broadcast.
I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses
A Canadian courtroom drama about a real murder. Its presence on the list is inexplicable.
Blood Rites
Andy Milligan shooting in Staten Island with a hand-held Auricon. An acquired taste nobody acquires.
Sissy
An Australian wellness influencer at a hen weekend. Much sharper and much nastier than the premise suggests.
Fight for Your Life
A home invasion built entirely on racial abuse. Genuinely hard to watch and not for craft reasons.
