The Bay
Barry Levinson made a found-footage eco-horror about a Chesapeake town and parasitic isopods.
On the Fourth of July, a Maryland bay town is overrun by an outbreak: a mutated isopod, grown huge on agricultural runoff and chicken-farm waste, that eats its hosts from the inside.
Levinson, who won an Oscar for Rain Man, assembles it entirely from found footage: news reports, police dashcams, FaceTime calls, a doctor's phone, all supposedly leaked years after a cover-up.
The science is real and that is the horror. Cymothoa isopods exist, the Chesapeake's pollution from poultry runoff is real and documented, and the film is essentially a horror-shaped environmental documentary.
It is nasty about what comes out of people, and the multi-source structure is used better than most found footage manages.
It was barely released and is the best thing in this corner of the genre in years.
