The three actors were given a rough plot, sent into the woods with the cameras, and directed by notes left in film cans at checkpoints. Their food was reduced daily to make them irritable. The arguments are real arguments, which is why the group dynamic curdles convincingly in a way scripted found footage never manages.

The marketing was the first great use of the web: a site presenting the actors as missing persons, an IMDb listing to match, and a genuine number of people who believed it.

The final shot is a man facing a corner. It works entirely because of a piece of folklore mentioned once, forty minutes earlier, by somebody who was not important at the time.

It is also nauseating to watch and about a third of people cannot get through the handheld sections.
