Noroi: The Curse

Presented as the final work of a paranormal researcher whose house burned down with his wife inside it.

Koji Shiraishi assembles it from television clips, interviews, hidden camera and the man's own footage, and the structure is the achievement: threads that appear unrelated for an hour, a noisy psychic in a tinfoil suit, a missing girl, a village flooded by a dam, all converge in the last twenty minutes.

It is slow, it is nearly two hours, and it demands you keep track of names, which is exactly why the pay-off works.

The final tape is one of the frightening endings in found footage.

Almost unknown outside Japan for a decade because it had no western release. It is the best film the format has produced.
