Ravenous

A Sierra Nevada fort in 1847, cannibalism as manifest destiny, and a score unlike any other.

A cowardly officer is posted to a remote garrison. A stranger arrives half-dead with a story about a wagon party trapped in a cave.

Antonia Bird took over after the original director was fired days in, and the film's tonal instability, veering from black comedy to genuine horror, is partly that history and partly design.

The score by Michael Nyman and Damon Albarn is the thing everybody remembers: banjo, detuned strings and marching drums, deliberately jaunty over appalling events.

Robert Carlyle is magnificent and clearly enjoying himself. Guy Pearce plays the whole film as a man who wants to be somewhere else.

It flopped completely and has become a genuine cult item. The wendigo material is handled seriously, and the film's argument about appetite and expansion is not subtle and not wrong.
