Death Line

A cave-in during Victorian excavation trapped a work gang. They were left. Their descendants have been down there since, and there is one left.

Gary Sherman shot it in disused Underground tunnels and the creature is presented with genuine pity: he is diseased, grieving a dead mate, and the only word he can say is a garbled version of the station announcement his ancestors heard.

The single unbroken tracking shot around the underground lair, revealing bodies in various states, is the best thing in British horror of the decade.

Donald Pleasence plays the detective as a rude, tea-obsessed man who is very funny and completely uninterested in anybody's feelings, and he improvised most of it.

Christopher Lee appears for one scene, as a favour, and enjoys himself.
