Nicolas Cage, a chainsaw duel and Jóhann Jóhannsson's last score. Not for everyone and not trying to be.
Nicolas Cage, a chainsaw duel, a cult, and Jóhann Jóhannsson's last score. Not for everyone and not attempting to be.
A logger and his partner live quietly in the Shadow Mountains in 1983. A travelling cult leader sees her, decides he wants her, and sends for demonic bikers to take her.
Panos Cosmatos shoots the first hour as a slow, hypnotic, red-and-black dream with almost no dialogue, and the second as a revenge film in which Cage forges an axe and drinks a bottle of vodka in a bathroom in a scene that has become its own genre of clip.
Jóhannsson's score is doom-metal guitar arranged as orchestral drone. He died before it was released.
Linus Roache plays the cult leader as a failed folk singer who is furious that nobody liked his album, which is the funniest and most accurate detail in it.

Adjacent
Blood Rites
Andy Milligan shooting in Staten Island with a hand-held Auricon. An acquired taste nobody acquires.
Fight for Your Life
A home invasion built entirely on racial abuse. Genuinely hard to watch and not for craft reasons.
Mardi Gras Massacre
An Aztec-obsessed killer in New Orleans. A Blood Feast remake in all but name, and slower.
Exposé
The only British film on the DPP list. A novelist, a typist and Fiona Richmond in a farmhouse.
Don't Go Near the Park
Cursed cave dwellers from 12,000 BC eating people in modern Los Angeles. Incoherent throughout.
Frozen Scream
Every line is dubbed, including scenes with nobody talking. Almost hypnotically incompetent.
