It Follows
One rule, followed exactly. The most frightening use of a wide shot in modern horror.
The premise is a single mechanic: something is walking toward you, always, at walking pace, and only you can see it. Pass it on and it goes to the next person, but if they die it comes back down the line to you.
David Robert Mitchell shoots it in Detroit suburbs in slow, wide, deep-focus compositions, which turns every scene into a game of scanning the background. That is the whole trick and it is a very good trick.
Disasterpeace's synth score is doing an enormous amount and knows it. The deliberately unplaceable period, 1970s cars, modern clothes, a clamshell e-reader, is not sloppiness.

Adjacent
Delirium
A Vietnam veteran, a vigilante group and a plot that gives up. Not the Lamberto Bava one.
Penda's Fen
A BBC play about a repressed vicar's son in the English countryside, and it is one of the strangest things ever broadcast.
I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses
A Canadian courtroom drama about a real murder. Its presence on the list is inexplicable.
Don't Go in the Woods
Shot in Utah for 100,000 dollars with a score that never stops. Beloved by a small and stubborn group.
Sissy
An Australian wellness influencer at a hen weekend. Much sharper and much nastier than the premise suggests.
Mardi Gras Massacre
An Aztec-obsessed killer in New Orleans. A Blood Feast remake in all but name, and slower.
