I Saw the Devil

A secret agent catches a serial killer, releases him, and does it again. And again.

Kim Jee-woon's film is about the futility of revenge, and it makes that argument by being almost unwatchable.

Soo-hyun's fiancée is murdered. He tracks the killer, beats him, plants a tracker, and lets him go, intending to repeat this indefinitely until the man understands.

Choi Min-sik plays Kyung-chul as a man with no interior life at all, who takes the opportunities his freedom provides, which the film treats as the entirely predictable consequence of the plan.

The taxi sequence, a fight in a moving car filmed with the camera rotating inside it, is a technical marvel.

It is extremely violent and unusually grim about sexual violence, and it was cut in Korea after being refused a rating twice.

The final scene is the argument landing, and it is devastating rather than cathartic.
