Dog Soldiers

Six soldiers on a training exercise find a special forces unit torn apart. Something is still out there. They hole up in a farmhouse.

Neil Marshall made it before The Descent for very little money, and the werewolves are seven-foot performers on stilts in suits, kept in shadow and moving fast, which is why they hold up.

The film is very funny and the squad banter is the reason: these are recognisable soldiers complaining about football and rations, and you like all of them before anything happens.

Kevin McKidd and Sean Pertwee are both excellent, and Pertwee's stomach is the source of the best gag in the film.

It is one of the very few good werewolf films of the last forty years, largely because it never attempts a transformation on camera.
