When Animals Dream

A Danish coming-of-age werewolf film, and the transformation is puberty in a fishing village that already knows.

Marie lives on a remote Danish coast, caring for a catatonic mother and working at the fish plant. She begins to change. The village has seen this before and has a plan for it.

Jonas Alexander Arnby makes it as social realism with a monster: the town's men have already decided what Marie is and what is to be done, her mother is the last one this happened to, and the film is about a community's quiet cruelty to its own.

It is closer to Let the Right One In than to any werewolf film, cold, grey and restrained, with the horror in the neighbours rather than the change.

Sonia Suhl is excellent in her first role.

Very little happens loudly, and the ending is a genuine act of defiance.
