Candyman

Philip Glass wrote the score believing it was an art film. That mistake is why it sounds like nothing else.

A graduate student researching urban legends in Chicago goes to Cabrini-Green to investigate a story the residents tell about a hook-handed figure summoned by saying his name five times.

Bernard Rose adapted a Clive Barker story set in Liverpool and moved it to a real housing project, shooting in the actual buildings with residents involved, which gives it a documentary weight almost nothing in the genre has.

Tony Todd is extraordinary: the voice is the effect, and he had real bees in his mouth for the final sequences under a mouthguard, and was stung repeatedly.

Glass took the commission thinking it was a small independent film, was upset when it was marketed as a slasher, and wrote an organ and choral score that gives the film a grandeur it would not otherwise have.

The politics, about who gets believed and whose deaths get investigated, are unusually sharp for 1992.
