Rabid

Cronenberg's second feature, with an experimental skin graft, a stinger in an armpit, and a plague across Montreal.

A woman injured in a motorcycle crash is given experimental surgery, develops a new orifice under her arm with a retractable spike, and needs blood. The people she feeds on become rabid and spread it.

Cronenberg cast Marilyn Chambers, then known for adult films, in a deliberate provocation, and she is truly good as a woman horrified by what she has become.

The film is the second run at the ideas in Shivers: a medical intervention that unleashes an appetite, a sealed community overwhelmed, and Montreal put under martial law with garbage trucks collecting bodies.

It is rough and cheap and full of ideas that his later films would refine, and it is more frightening in its final act, with the city in quarantine, than the premise suggests.
