Godzilla Minus One
Seventy years on, the series returns to what it was for: the war, the guilt, and the cost.
Set in the immediate aftermath of Japan's defeat, it follows a failed kamikaze pilot carrying his survival as shame, in a Tokyo already flattened, when a creature enlarged by atomic testing arrives to finish what the war started.
Takashi Yamazaki wrote, directed and supervised the effects, and made the film for a fraction of a Hollywood blockbuster's budget while winning the Academy Award for Visual Effects, the first Japanese film to do so.
The point is that it returns Godzilla to the original's meaning: the monster is the war, the trauma is the subject, and the human story of men told they were expendable is the actual film.
The train sequence and the first Ginza attack are staged with real weight and real terror.
It was an enormous global hit and reminded everybody what the character was invented to be.

Night of the Demon
Bigfoot tears a man's genitals off. That is the scene, that is the film, that is why it was prosecuted.
The Werewolf and the Yeti
Paul Naschy in the Himalayas. On the list almost certainly because somebody read the title and stopped.
Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell
A plane crash, an alien blob, and the single most striking red sky in Japanese genre film. Tarantino borrowed it.
Resolution
Two friends in a cabin while something rewrites the story around them. Benson and Moorhead's first film.
Messiah of Evil
A California coastal town waiting for a blood moon, made by the writers of American Graffiti, and it looks like nothing else.
Night of the Bloody Apes
A luchadora, a heart transplant from a gorilla, and real open-heart surgery footage spliced in.
