Creepshow

Romero and King doing EC Comics, with panel borders, primary lighting and a story about a cake.

Five stories in a comic-book frame: a returning corpse at a birthday, a meteorite that grows grass, a husband burying two lovers up to their necks on a beach, a crate under a stairwell, and a germophobe and the cockroaches.

Tom Savini did the effects and Romero shoots each segment with hard reds and blues bleeding in from the frame edges, with actual panel transitions, which nobody had attempted at that scale.

King wrote it and stars in one segment as a hillbilly, playing it enormously broadly, which people either love or cannot get through.

The Crate is the best story and Adrienne Barbeau's performance in it is the reason.

They Are Creeping Up on You uses about 20,000 live cockroaches, which the crew have discussed at length in interviews and which are exactly what they look like.
