City of the Living Dead

A priest hangs himself and opens a gate. Fulci at his least coherent and most upsetting.

A medium in New York sees a suicide in a New England town called Dunwich and dies of fright. A journalist digs her up. The dead are rising and the gate must be closed before All Saints' Day.

The plot exists to connect a series of set pieces, and Fulci's genuine subject is atmosphere: fog, maggots blown by wind machines, a graveyard, a bar full of people who stop talking.

The drill sequence and the vomiting sequence are the two everybody mentions, and the latter, achieved with sheep offal, is the reason for the film's reputation and is difficult even for people who like this material.

Fabio Frizzi's score is the best of his three for Fulci.

The ending is a freeze frame that breaks up, which was reportedly a solution to a problem on set rather than a choice. It works anyway.
