Gerald Kargl based it on a real Austrian case and made a film with almost no dialogue except continuous internal monologue, in which the killer describes his own compulsions in a flat, self-pitying voice while failing at almost everything he attempts.

Zbigniew Rybczyński designed a body-mounted rig that keeps the camera at a fixed distance above and around the actor, so it swoops and circles constantly. The technique was decades early and has been copied by Gaspar Noé repeatedly.

Klaus Kinski was originally sought for the lead. Erwin Leder is better.

It was banned across most of Europe and was almost impossible to see legally for thirty years. It is one of the most disturbing films ever made and there is nothing enjoyable in it.
