Piggy

A Spanish teenager who is bullied about her weight witnesses something, and is left holding a moral problem entirely alone.

Sara works in her family's butcher shop in an Extremadura town in a heatwave. Three girls torment her at the pool. A stranger with a van sees it happen and takes an interest.

Carlota Pereda shoots the first act with genuine cruelty and the heat is a character: everything is bright, sweaty and airless, and Sara walks home along a road in a wet swimsuit for what feels like an unbearable length of time.

Laura Galán is extraordinary and was in her thirties playing sixteen.

The film refuses to make Sara heroic or the bullies redeemable, and its subject is complicity rather than revenge, which is a much harder thing to end well. It does.
