Cemetery Man
The last great Italian horror film, and it is a romantic comedy about a man who shoots the dead for a living.
Francesco Dellamorte is the caretaker of a cemetery where the dead come back on the seventh night. He shoots them in the head and files the paperwork. Nobody in the town cares.
Michele Soavi adapts a Tiziano Sclavi novel and makes something closer to Cocteau than to Fulci: the film is about depression, boredom and the impossibility of connection, with a zombie problem treated as a tedious municipal duty.
Rupert Everett is perfect and the character was drawn to look like him years before he was cast.
Anna Falchi plays every woman he falls in love with.
The last twenty minutes abandon reality entirely and the final shot is one of the strangest and most affecting endings in the genre.
Martin Scorsese has called it one of the best Italian films of the decade.

Adjacent
Delirium
A Vietnam veteran, a vigilante group and a plot that gives up. Not the Lamberto Bava one.
Penda's Fen
A BBC play about a repressed vicar's son in the English countryside, and it is one of the strangest things ever broadcast.
I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses
A Canadian courtroom drama about a real murder. Its presence on the list is inexplicable.
Sissy
An Australian wellness influencer at a hen weekend. Much sharper and much nastier than the premise suggests.
Exposé
The only British film on the DPP list. A novelist, a typist and Fiona Richmond in a farmhouse.
The Slayer
A painter's nightmares kill people on an off-season island. Genuinely atmospheric and badly underrated.
